About Us: Welcome to the Schizophrenia Caregiver Sanctuary
If you are caring for an adult loved one with schizophrenia, you already know that this journey can feel deeply isolating. You love your family member fiercely, but navigating doctor appointments, complex housing laws, and daily communication barriers can leave you feeling overwhelmed and exhausted.
You do not have to walk this path alone. Welcome to the Schizophrenia Caregiver Sanctuary.
Our Mission
We created this sanctuary to be a safe, welcoming space built by a family caregiver, for family caregivers. Our mission is to empower our community with practical tools, evidence-based caregiving strategies, and clear, plain-language resources so you can help your loved one thrive while protecting your own well-being.
What We Provide
We cut through the clinical jargon to give you actionable, real-world advice that you can use at home today. Here is what you will find in our sanctuary:
- Evidence-Based Communication Tools: Practical guides on transforming clinical techniques—like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for psychosis (CBTp)—into everyday conversations that build trust and de-escalate tension.
- Cognitive Support Strategies: Fun, non-clinical daily activities and guides on Cognitive Remediation Therapy (CRT) to help sharpen your loved one's memory and daily life skills.
- Navigating Systemic Support: Clear, step-by-step navigation through complex public systems, from HUD housing vouchers and Mainstream Vouchers to Reasonable Accommodations and communication programs like Psychosis REACH.
Our Story: Walking This Path Together
Welcome to Our Journey
Back in the summer of 2010, my world changed overnight. My loved one received a schizophrenia diagnosis, and to be completely honest with you, I was absolutely terrified. I had no idea how to find the right help for him, and I didn't even truly understand what the diagnosis meant. All the initial information I found told me there was no cure, and that this would be a lifelong battle. But in the middle of all that fear, I made a quiet promise to him and to myself: I was going to be right by his side, every single step of the way.
Finding Answers and a Tribe
With that promise in my heart, I threw myself into research. I read absolutely everything I could get my hands on. I found some wonderful pieces of information, but early on, I felt so lost trying to figure out how to actually use it in our daily lives.
Everything changed when I took a leap of faith, connected with families online, and signed up for NAMI’s Family-to-Family class. That class was an absolute lifesaver. While the lessons were incredibly valuable, the absolute best part was just looking around the room and realizing I wasn't alone. Connecting with other families who were navigating the exact same sudden onset of this illness gave me a sense of peace I hadn't felt in months. We bonded over our shared struggles, and I'm so grateful to say that several of those wonderful people are still my close friends all these years later.
As time went on, I also found comfort in private caregiver groups. I learned better ways to communicate with my loved one and picked up invaluable, practical tips for managing day-to-day life. But as I gathered all these bits and pieces, I couldn't help but wonder: Why isn't all of this in one, easy-to-find place? Trying to find your way through this mental healthcare maze shouldn't have to be a lonely, exhausting treasure hunt.
Becoming a Safe Harbor (and a "Sponge Brain")
As the years rolled by, my hands-on experience grew. I started sharing the tools and resources I uncovered with the caregiver groups I belonged to. Before I knew it, I became a trusted, go-to resource for other families who were searching for answers just like I used to be.
I realized I have a bit of a knack for diving deep into complicated medical or governmental information, breaking it down, and figuring out how it can actually help someone in a specific, real-world situation. People in my community even started telling me I have a "sponge brain" because I have this unique ability to retain all the messy, moving parts of the mental healthcare system!
But I always like to remind people that I didn't just learn this from textbooks or medical journals. I learned the most valuable lessons from other caregivers. They taught me the real, everyday wisdom that doctors don't always mention. Plus, every time a fellow caregiver asked a tough question, it gave me a brand new puzzle to solve, leading to even more answers for all of us.
Where We Are Today
It has been a long, sixteen-year road, but I am so incredibly grateful to share that my loved one is now in an excellent, safe, and deeply supportive residential treatment program. Knowing that he is secure and surrounded by wonderful caregivers has finally given me the breathing room to focus on a project that has been living in my heart for a long time: this website.
This platform is a true labor of love. It is the exact collection of clear, and comprehensive resources that I wish someone had handed me during those dark, frightening days back in 2010. Learn more about our journey through the CA conservatorship process in our Facebook Blog, Broken.
An Informational Haven For You
We believe that finding reliable information shouldn't be a secondary burden for an already exhausted caregiver. Because caregivers are a collective force, the knowledge one of us gains should light the way for the rest of us.
This website functions as a structured library to take the guesswork out of housing, communication frameworks, and cognitive care. We don't have to walk this path in the dark alone.
Resource Inquiries & Contact
